Group Discussions > Parakeets in the garden

We have a very noisy population of parakeets in Wetherby Gardens. They shriek at all hours of daylight, making life at home rather unpleasant and apparently discouraging songbirds from singing while they are out. I've read and been told that these birds have been declared pests in the UK and can be eradicated legally. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to get rid of them or discourage them from nesting and/or living in a garden?

If you live on Wetherby Gardens and would also like to see these birds gone, please speak up so that we can try to come up with a solution collectively.

we live in surrey and the lady next door has feeding stations on her line so the birds congregate in one of our trees and then all swoop into her garden to feed . they are so noisy they are driving us mad , we cant let the dog in the garden because he just keeps barking at them and makes it even more stressful,we have told our neighbour how distressing we find it but she just says she loves them .if anyone has any ideas to deter them we would love yo know .

Parakeets, the vermin! It will only be when the powers that be realise how much these birds are damaging/reducing the numbers of the smaller birds that action will be taken. A flock of them have just descended on Warfield Park in Berkshire; if they truly settle here they will drive me insane. If a neighbour or his dog made so many decibels of noise as two or more parakeets make, he/she would be sent packing if in rental accommodation or if living in own house, fined or worse. It is shocking that nothing was done when they first appeared. Nothing is done now that they are officially a pest.

I hate parakeets they invade my garden for most of the day. I spend my life trying to hit them with a high powered water pistol. They have a field day when I go out!!! They eat all my nuts and bird seed so unless I do this the blue tits can't get any food as they are frightened of them. If I could shoot them all I would. What is the answer. I can keep squirrels out but not parakeets
